My Football Bucket List

Curse you both, Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.

You may be giants–nay, legends of American cinema–but I have a grievance to air with both of you.

You have stolen my catch phrase. Kind of.

Back in 2001 or so, one of my co-workers and I were talking about cool things we wanted to do before we died. I can’t remember if the discussion was born of a book title we had heard about–I think it is called “1000 Places to See Before You Die”–or if the drudgery of drawing toilet room details on CAD simply became too much to bear, but at some point we started to rattle off stuff we wanted to accomplish. This idea of a list stayed with me long after quitting time and so I went home and started to write it down. Scribbling feverishly, I came up with about ten solid items that I thought would represent a life well lived, so I titled the list “Ten Things to Do Before I Die.” (Not very clever, I know.) Not a minute had passed when a half dozen more ideas sprang to mind, so I had to amend the working title to “Ten Things to Do Before I Die (& Then Some).” My entries run the gamut of life opportunities: “1. See the aurora borealis.” “7. Watch Old Faithful erupt. August 2002″ “12. Design my own house and have it built.” “13. Try haggis. 1/25/09.”

The list is dynamic and I’m not afraid to edit it every few years to reflect my life station and personal interests. Back in 2001, I was really into climbing and so many of the entries were related to mountaineering: “3. Summit Mt. Rainier – 7:01 a.m., 7/16/03, 14,410′.” “8. Climb 5.10C”. Since I’ve hung up my rock shoes for good, freeing a 5.10C is no longer a priority and so it got changed to something else. As you might imagine, a few of those entries got changed to…football. Currently, of the twenty-three items on the list, only two are relate to the Beautiful Game: “22. See Manchester United play at Old Trafford – 8/6/08, 0-0 Juventus” and “23. Score a goal for FC77 Rangers – 5/21/06, 8-0 win.” Given how much I obsess about soccer, that seems disproportionately low, but with time running out to see a space shuttle launch (new item #8), that could easily be changed to something else. Maybe “Score a hat trick.”

Which gets me back to my beef with Jack and Morgan. For years I could smugly drop little nuggets of life goodness in casual conversation or at parties when the talk stalled. I could happily exclaim, “Another Thing to Do Before I Die done!” Now, when I brag about eating two helpings of haggis and the significance of that, I get a “oh, you mean your Bucket List.” It has become pointless to insist I had come up with my catch phrase a good seven years before the movie came out, so now I begrudgingly acknowledge, “Yes, my bucket list.”

So how about you, Weekend Warriors? What would be on your Football Bucket List? I would love to hear about it. Oh, and in the interest of blatant self-promotion, my wife recently bet me I couldn’t garner twenty-five comments to a post. Can you help a brother out? I know you have something you want to do on the pitch/beside the pitch/because of the pitch, so feel free to drop a comment.

Mine was see the France NT play in Paris. Accomplished 09/12/07.

Of course after I traveled 5000 miles to make it happen, they then had the bad manners to lose. But that just meant I got to experience the full glory of the Scotland’s Tartan Army, i.e. 15,000 men in kilts, parading joyfully down the street afterwards.

    Great memories!

    Done:

Earn a medal properly. Added that to my list when I was 14 and my high school team – which was damn good – won the West Midlands Cup (English equivalent of being state champions in the US, sort of). Downside is that I was an unused substitute, and had been for most of the season, so never felt like I earned it (because I definitely didn’t, unless being linesman counts). After a string of subsequent runners-up medals (Michael Ballack’s got nothing on me) I finally picked up some proper silverware in 2004, and a bit more in 2007. Rec men’s league stuff obviously, but I’m still pretty proud of it.

Try out for a pro team. Did that in 2006 for an alt weekly magazine article (lost the link). Was Richmond Kickers of USL-2. Didn’t impress (assistant coach said “I think the [local rec league] needs you more than we do!”) but wasn’t a total embarrassment either (meaning no one laughed out loud). Mac Kandji (now of NYRB Offside interview fame) was on my team in the practice match, but he didn’t get picked up either (actually, think he got a better offer).

    Not Done:

Watch Wolves play in the Prem. Seen plenty of them in the Championship, but never been to see them in the Prem. Maybe next season?

Watch England play at the World Cup. Always wanted to, never managed it. Maybe next year?

Score an impressive goal. I play a lot, but very rarely get my name on the scoresheet. And when I do it’s a header off a corner or a tap-in off my knee-cap or something equally unimpressive. Just once I’d like to dribble past a minimum of three people and then bend it into the far corner.

-See a Celtic vs Rangers Derby match and/or Boca Juniors vs River Plate

If I’m making the rules of the bet, Brian, re-commenting doesn’t count, but Sean appreciates your efforts and also hopes you score a goal for your men’s team. And Sean, I’m not counting your comment nor my own, so har har! :-P

Sean’s wife, I know this doesn’t count to the total, but I was this close to checking one off the Football bucket list on Sunday…but the one on one with the Keeper, my own mind and the largest open net I have ever seen denied me. So next week I will return to the back line as I think of how glorious it could have been.

    Forgot my bucket list
(yeah, forgot, right, totally not trying to help Sean out here :P )
    1) Watch Italy play a WC match in person
    2) Watch and AC Milan match from the Curva Sud
    3) Meet Rino Gattuso, my footballing idol
    4) Score a goal for my highschool team
    5) Continue to play footy into college and beyond
    6) Learn how to to the “around the world” juggling trick (youtube that)
The list goes on and on, but I’m young so I’ve got plenty of time to achieve these things.
I plan on going to the 2010 WC as a graduation gift!

I’d like to amend my bucket list and add one.

To be able to say, when I’m forty, that the indoor match I played on Sunday March 15, 2009 was the worst match I’ve played as goalie. Ever.
